How Kanada Radio works
Kanada Radio turns Bluesky into radio. People post music there every day — a song they love, a record they just bought, a track for a daily challenge. Kanada Radio watches for those posts and plays them, back to back, like a station.
The one idea that makes it different
A station is a question, not a playlist. Nobody uploaded these tracks and nobody sat down and ordered them.
A normal playlist is a fixed list someone made once. A Kanada Radio station is a standing question asked of the whole network — something like “what is anyone posting under #musicsky right now?” — and the queue is whatever the answer happens to be this minute. Come back tomorrow and it is different music, because different people posted.
That is why it behaves like radio instead of a library. You are not listening to a collection. You are listening to what a few thousand people are excited about today.
Where the music comes from
- Someone posts a song on Bluesky with a tag like
#musicsky,#nowplayingor#musicchallenge. - Kanada Radio checks the network every few minutes and picks up the playable ones.
- It plays in YouTube’s official player, credited to whoever shared it.
Roughly six in ten music posts are playable. The rest are photos of records, gig pictures, or links to a channel rather than a song — good posts, just not things a queue can play.
How tracks get ordered
Four things decide what plays first:
- How recent it is. Today outranks last week.
- How many different people posted it. This is the strong one. If nine separate accounts independently share the same song, that means something — and unlike a like count, one person cannot fake it.
- Votes from listeners here.
- Likes and reposts the post earned on Bluesky itself.
No single account can take over a station either — each one is capped at a few tracks per queue, so a prolific poster cannot crowd everyone else out.
Why sign in
You never need an account to listen. Everything plays for everyone. Signing in with Bluesky adds four things:
- Vote on tracks. Up means more like this; down skips it and pushes it down for everyone.
- Build your own stations. Point one at any hashtag or any account on the network.
- Your votes count as you. Tied to your real identity, which is what stops a single person voting a thousand times.
- Keep your stations. They belong to your account, so you can come back and change them.
Signing in goes through Bluesky’s own login, on Bluesky’s own site. We never see your password, and you can revoke Kanada Radio any time from your Bluesky settings. It works with any AT Protocol account, including self-hosted ones — not just bsky.social.
Sharing what you hear
The Share button posts the current track to Bluesky tagged #kanadaradio. It opens Bluesky’s composer so you can edit it first — nothing is posted on your behalf without you seeing it.
Anything shared that way is picked up again by the network, so what listeners here share becomes part of what everyone hears next.

Questions
Can I get rid of the ads on videos?
Not from our side, and we will not pretend otherwise. Videos play in YouTube’s own player, and YouTube’s rules for developers specifically forbid apps from blocking or skipping their ads. Any app that does it loses access and stops working entirely.
What genuinely works: if you have YouTube Premium and are signed into YouTube in this same browser, videos here play ad-free automatically. That is your subscription doing its job, and nothing needs enabling here.
Does the visualizer follow the actual music?
By default, no — and that is a browser limitation rather than a shortcut. YouTube plays inside a sandboxed frame from another site, and browsers deliberately prevent pages from reading audio out of those frames. The default visualizer moves in time with playback but is not analysing sound.
If you want the real thing, click react to real audio under the player. Your browser will ask you to share this tab including its audio, and from then on the bars follow the actual waveform. It has to be re-granted each session, which is why it is not the default.
Something inappropriate is playing.
Hit Report and it skips immediately and gets flagged. Enough reports pull it from every station.
We also filter before anything reaches a queue: posts that Bluesky’s moderation has labelled — adult content, graphic media, spam — are dropped during collection and never stored. We additionally skip anyone who has asked not to be shown to logged-out viewers, since this is a public page.
A track will not play.
Some uploaders disable playback outside YouTube. Kanada Radio detects that, skips it, and removes it so nobody else hits the same dead track.
Why does my station have nothing in it?
The tags you chose probably have no recent music posts. Stations only ever contain what the network actually posted — an empty station means an empty topic, not a broken app. Try a broader tag, or add an account that posts music regularly.
Do you host any of this music?
No. Kanada Radio stores links and the posts that contained them. Every video is served by YouTube and every credit points back to the person on Bluesky who shared it.
